Zyloric is prescribed for the treatment of gout, elevated uric acid levels in the body caused by specific cancer treatments, and kidney stones. Allopurinol belongs to a group of drugs known as xanthine oxidase inhibitors. Its function is to decrease the amount of uric acid produced in the body. Excessive uric acid can trigger gout attacks or lead to kidney stones. Zyloric is intended to prevent gout attacks rather than treat them once they happen.

Zyloric minimizes the production of uric acid in the body. It will not alleviate an ongoing gout attack and is not a cure for gout, but it aids in preventing future attacks. It is important to take Zyloric regularly for a few months for it to be effective. The prevention of gout attacks with Zyloric continues only as long as the medication is taken.

Zyloric is also utilized to avert or address other health issues related to excessive uric acid levels in the body, which may include particular types of kidney stones or other kidney-related conditions.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you have any allergies to Allopurinol or other medications. Disclose all prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking. Make sure to mention any of the following: amoxicillin; ampicillin; anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin; cancer chemotherapy medications like cyclophosphamide and mercaptopurine; chlorpropamide; diuretics ('water pills'); immune-suppressing drugs such as azathioprine and cyclosporine; additional gout medications like probenecid and sulfinpyrazone; and tolbutamide. Your doctor may need to adjust your medication doses or monitor you closely for potential side effects.

Notify your doctor if you currently have or have ever had kidney or liver ailments or heart failure. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant during Zyloric treatment, contact your doctor immediately.

It is important to note that Zyloric may cause drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you are aware of how the medication affects you. Consult your doctor regarding the safe consumption of alcohol while on Zyloric, as alcohol may reduce the drug’s effectiveness.
